Confirmation Information

Our Confirmation program is a relationship based program for Junior High school aged students who are in 7th, 8th and 9th grades. We meet on Wednesday evenings from 7:00-8:30 pm. Our year starts Wednesday, September 10th and extends through the beginning of Lent (February 18th), but students will have an opportunity to take part in at least one of the Lenten services. Our new “Here We Stand” curriculum uses large and small group activities and retreats to help students develop meaningful relationships with God, peers and adults. We will also learn ways to respond to God’s unconditional love through serving the church and the community. Students usually enter the program beginning in the fall of their 7th grade year and continue the program through 9th grade.

* Affirmation of Faith takes place in the 10TH grade on Reformation Sunday in the fall.

To parents: When your child was baptized*, you made some promises on his or her behalf. You promised to bring your child to worship; to teach him the Lord’s Prayer, the Ten Commandments, and the Creed; to share the scriptures with him or her and to provide instruction in the Christian faith. Confirmation is about keeping your promises. The congregation – this or another one – made some promises too, and offering confirmation instruction is part of keeping those promises.

To students: “WHY AM I HERE?” is what most confirmation students wonder. Are your parents making you come? Guess what? There’s a good reason. It’s because when you were baptized*, your parents made some promises on your behalf: to bring you to worship, to teach you the Bible, to bring you to Sunday School. Now it’s your turn to start taking responsibility for your faith, which means that Confirmation is about making those promises for yourself. You’re getting older. Your faith in God is no longer something your parents do for you; you have opinions and ideas of your own. Confirmation is about asking questions – and not always getting the answers. To help along the way, we’ll start by studying the basics of the Bible. You will study the Old and New Testaments in 7th and 8th grade and move on to the basics of Christianity in the 9th grade: the Ten Commandments, the Lord’s Prayer, the Apostles’ Creed, baptism and communion. We will also help you discover what it means to be a member in the Church. And we’re planning to have some fun too, just so you know.

*If you have not been baptized we still want you to be a part of the program. Please let Tammie know so we can get you more information!

Parent Orientation Meeting
Parents of Confirmation students new and returning - please plan to attend our Parent Orientation session on the first night of Confirmation, Wednesday, Sep. 10th, 7:00pm-8:30pm. We will introduce you to the new Confirmation curriculum, outline expectations, and give you a chance to ask questions. You will also have a chance to meet other parents as well as your child's small group leaders.

Holy Spirit Lutheran Church is committed to keeping children safe, and so asks that all adults volunteering in ministries with children and youth undergo a background screening. Our guidelines are outlines in a “Safe Haven” policy, available in our church office. We also ask that you attend a training session so you are familiar with this policy and have the opportunity to ask questions. Contact the church office to register for the next class or obtain the class schedule.
