THE PRAYER CHAIN is for everyone. Please call whenever you have concerns for which
you would like prayer. Prayer requests may come from anyone at anytime. All
requests are held in strictest confidence.
We encourage anyone who would like to join us in praying for others to do so.
"Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving present
your requests to God." (Phil. 4:6)

QUILTS FOR GRADUATING SENIORS!
It’s time to gear up again
for our High School Senior Quilt project! We are looking for experienced quilters to help with
this project. The pattern we use is very easy and a lot of fun to assemble.
Questionnaires are sent to all 2009 graduating seniors in August. In
September, the quilters will be able to select a student for whom to make a
quilt. A series of workshops will be scheduled to assist in completing the
quilts.
The finished quilts will be presented to the graduating seniors during the
11:00 am worship service on May 3, 2009. As in years past, we will have a cookie
reception and photo op with seniors and quilters following the 11:00 am service.
We hope you will consider joining us in this worthwhile and rewarding
endeavor! We have a great time, and the presentation of the quilts is a very
meaningful experience for both the student and the quilter!

Contact Karen Spencer or Jackie Curdy through the Church Office to sign up!
HSLC Quilters meet on Thursdays at 9:00 am and 7:00 pm in
the lower fellowship hall area—next to the preschool space.
We meet every week except for VBS in July, Thanksgiving and
the last two weeks of December.
Our goal is to make 150 quilts for Lutheran World Relief each
year. We also make quilts for the Eastside Baby Corner and
new residents of Kirkland Interfaith Transitions in Housing
(K.I.T.H.). Our materials are funded by the HSLC budget, generous donations from
Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and fabric donated by friends and members of Holy
Spirit Lutheran. Because of this generosity, it is not necessary for us to have to spend
our time organizing fundraisers.
We welcome anyone to join us who loves fabric, likes to sew, likes to quilt or would like
to learn. Skill level is not important, but a sense of humor probably is! Join us on
Thursdays either in the morning or evening. If you have questions, contact Joyce Pinnt or Donna Morris
through the Church Office
Join the "fix-it" men of the church on Wednesday mornings as we work on
projects such as painting, maintenance, fixing, repairing and basically being useful!
We start off the morning with a coffee break and after all the hard work is
done, we end it with lunch at a local restaurant.
Gathering time is every Wednesday morning all year long from 9:30-11:30 am,
except during Vacation Bible School week. If you’ve got the time, we’d love
to have you join us!
This is a mid-week Bible study that meets on Wednesday mornings at 11:00 am and is
led by one of the pastors. We usually study the lessons from the Celebrate for
the following Sunday. On the first Wednesday of each month, we have a brown-bag
lunch and take turns bringing dessert for the group. If you are available on
Wednesday mornings, please come! Invite a neighbor or friend to come with you.
We begin our study group on September 10, 2008 and continue through May 27,
2009.
The Vintage Spirits is our “senior” members group. “Vintage” to us
signifies “a collection of contemporaneous persons of recognized
and enduring interest, importance and quality.” Anyone who fits
this description is welcome do join us.
Don’t let the name “vintage spirits” fool you! This is a very active group who likes to get
together for a variety of activities, which may include playing games, watching movies,
going on field trips, inviting speakers who talk about their travels or other interesting
topics or whatever else sounds interesting to us. Sometimes we just like to take time to
visit and enjoy each other’s company. We always share in bringing snacks to our
meetings to go along with our coffee.
In the past we met once a month on the 2nd Wednesday from 1:00-2:00 pm at Holy
Spirit. Starting in September of 2008 we will add another day each month to our
schedule. We look forward to growing and expanding our program and are excited
about new opportunities for our group. We will do a variety of activities for our 2nd time
during the month. Sometimes we will meet on that 4th Wednesday of the month here
at the church and sometimes we may just decide to go on a field trip. About four times
a year we plan to go somewhere outside of the church like to the Tulip Fields or on a
tour somewhere. Watch the weekly bulletins and newsletters to find out where we will
be at other times during the month.
Tammie Zarfos is going to help with the programming and setting up activities for the
group. Please contact her if you have questions or ideas to share. Paula and Walter
Schlotterbeck will also help with planning and facilitating the meetings.
Supper
Club is a rotating dinner program that is a fun way to share fellowship with
other church members you might not otherwise meet and with those whom you have
wanted to get better acquainted.
Interested people register as couples/partners/
"pair of friends" and on a 6-month rotation three couples are grouped
together, with one designated as the lead couple.
The group then has six months to schedule three "suppers", one at
each couple’s home, and can involve any type of meal and time to get together
(usually some sort of informal dinner).
The "lead" couple calls the others and sets up a mutually
convenient evening to host the first supper and arranges for one of the other
couples to provide the salad for that dinner and the other provides dessert. The
host couple provides the rest of the meal and beverages and also invites a 4th
couple of their choosing (a guest couple). The guest couple is, of course, not
expected to bring anything to dinner but their smiling faces.
At the end of that first evening the couples pick dates for the other two
couples to host dinner and decide who will bring salad and dessert so that each
couple hosts, brings the salad and brings the desert on one of the three dates.
After a six-month period, the Supper Club member couples are reshuffled,
assigned to new groups, and the cycle starts over, with the intention that there
is minimal repetition in pairings. To sign up, contact Bev & Bill Carberry
through the Church Office.
HOLY SPIRIT LUTHERAN’S BOOK CLUB
You are invited to join the HSLC Book Club! We meet the second Monday of each
month at 7:30 pm at the church for a discussion lasting usually about an hour.
Together we decide which books to read and find that a wide variety keeps the
group dynamics very interesting! We welcome regular participants as well as
occasional drop-ins. We meet in the fireside room in the library.
Contact Sara Bray through the Church Office.
MEN’S MONTHLY FELLOWSHIP BREAKFASTS
Great food, fellowship and enlightening discussion and sharing occur every 4th
Saturday, September through May. Our discussions center around short
presentations using various media. The theme for the first months of the upcoming
2008-2009 season is:
THE APOSTLES CREED
It is a bond that today unites believers from diverse cultures and traditions. A video
series will enable us to understand its origin and its relevance and application to our
lives today.
Join men from Holy Spirit and Trinity Lutheran for breakfast and fellowship beginning
September 27 at 8:30am. All breakfasts will be hosted in the HSLC fellowship hall.
Cost is $5.00.
WOMEN’S MONTHLY FELLOWSHIP BREAKFASTS
The women of Holy Spirit & Trinity Lutheran Churches will begin their monthly
meetings on September 13th, 8:30 am - 10:00 am and then again on the second
Saturday of each month. This breakfast group meets in the Holy Spirit Lutheran
Church Fellowship Hall. All women and friends are welcome to come for fellowship,
discussion following a great breakfast, catered by Becky Dress.
Watch the Spirit NEWS for discussion topic information.
If you have questions, or want to be on the email reservation list (not required), contact
Sharlene Hauge through the Church Office.
SUPPER CLUB FOR SINGLE WOMEN
Anyone like to eat? Anyone tired of eating alone?

Did you know the demographics of Kirkland indicate that a larger portion of our
population is women living alone?
Please come and join us. We have five teams of four women that are meeting together
for fellowship and of course, a good meal. We alternate at each other’s homes and all
join in providing the meal. When we have completed our cycle we will scramble the
names so we can meet new people. If you are interested in joining, please contact
Donna Morris through the Church Office
CONTEMPLATIVE PRAYER PRACTICE
A contemplative relationship with God is one that takes place in a silence
deeper than words. Early Christians used a meditative practice called
Contemplative Prayer. The practice has been revived by the rise of spiritual
hunger following World War II. Contemplative prayer is the opening of our whole
being to God, the Ultimate Mystery, beyond thoughts, words, and emotions. This
discipline is practiced by learning interior silence. This form of prayer does
not replicate other forms of prayer, but enhances and deepens one’s prayer
life.
There are several practices used for Contemplative Prayer. One well known
method is called Centering Prayer which is practiced widely in the Seattle area,
nationally and world-wide. There are other methods used as well. The group will
learn about several methods.
A warm welcome is extended to all who wish to join together in the practice
of Contemplative Prayer. This is a new group that is just beginning to explore
and learn about Contemplative Prayer. Please join other seekers and meet for
fellowship, learning from guest prayer facilitators and practicing the prayer of
silence, solitude and service together.
Prayer Practice Meetings will be the fourth Monday of each month 7:00 to 8:30pm Our dates
are: October 27, 2008; November 24, 2008; January 26, 2009; February 23, 2009;
March 29, 2009; April 27, 2009; May 18, 2009.
Please contact DyAnn Dennie through the Church Office if you have questions
or would like additional information.
