Housing and Homelessness

building with Habitat

Mission:

We envision a world in which every person has a safe place to call home. To that end we support and partner with organizations that provide:

  1. Emergency shelter
  2. Transitional housing
  3. Permanent affordable housing.
Below are descriptions of many of our on-going ministries and efforts designed to fulfill our vision for the world and all of God's children.

Compass Housing Alliance

Compass Housing Alliance is a result of the merger of the Lutheran Alliance to Create Housing (LATCH) and The Compass Center. Holy Spirit has a long history of supporting The Compass Center and in 2009 Holy Spirit became one of 36 Lutheran congregations that make up LATCH. In late 2009 these two ministries merged to provide a more comprehensive and sustainable array of housing and services to assist those in need.

The new organization, Compass Housing Alliance, will continue these ministries which have a long Lutheran heritage . The staffs, boards and church liaisons are excited about the opportunities to provide even greater support to homeless people and those needing stable housing. Each of these fine organizations brings significant strengths to address these needs and together their resources to go even farther. Compass Housing Alliance provide over 680 units of housing; serving over 5,000 men, women, and children in 12 locations around King County as well as providing a variety of services. In addition there are 5 housing projects under development through partnerships with local congregations which will substantially expand the housing resources provided by Compass Housing Alliance over the next 2-3 years.

Holy Spirit’s Housing Team has a mission to support all levels of housing needs, including emergency shelters, transitional housing, and permanent housing. Compass Housing Alliance is likewise aligned and is seeking new and innovative ways to address these needs. It is anticipated that there will be many new ways that we, as a church and as individuals, can support this ministry with our benevolences, time and skills.

If you are interested in getting involved in these exciting ministries please contact Pete Schnebele at 425-488-8376 or email at peteschnebele@msn.com.

Community Supper

This gathering of community to share in a meal has been taking place at Holy Spirit Lutheran Church since the early 1990’s. KITH sponsors the meal, providing representatives who are at the church from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. The calendar for 2010 has 15 host groups who will provide the meal. The hosts are made up of church groups, civic groups, and groups of friends from Kirkland. Holy Spirit Lutheran Church members provide four meals during the year in addition to providing the kitchen and fellowship hall for every meal.

Anyone is welcome at the supper. Many who come are families who live in KITH housing, families and individuals who want to stretch their food budget, and homeless people. The supper is advertised in church bulletins, notices at Hope-link food bank, the Teen Center in Kirkland, Tent City and by word of mouth. All who attend enjoy a good meal, good conversation and special holiday celebrations. Tutoring for children is available from 5:00 to 6:00 PM each Tuesday. There is a very important back-to-school event in August. KITH arranges for children to receive school supplies, haircuts given, and special games and crafts that evening. All of these activities are designed to prepare the children for a new and successful year in school.

Community Supper attendees along with residents of KITH housing are the recipients of Holy Spirit Lutheran’s generous Thanksgiving boxes and gifts from a Christmas giving tree. Providing a gathering space, food, and packages tied with a bow, we are taking giant steps to become a ‘public church’.

Angeline's Eastside Women's Center

HSLC is pleased to support Angeline's Eastside Women's Center with lunches on the second and third Tuesdays of every month. A partnership between the YWCA and Bellevue First Congregational Church, Angeline's provides a safe and warm place for homeless women to be during the day.

At Angeline's homeless women find immediate and long term support. They can shower, wash clothes and have a hot lunch with others. YWCA staff also provide resources for housing, counseling, employment and medical treatment.

We have an ongoing need for volunteers willing to prepare and/or deliver a meal. If you can make a couple dozen sandwiches, a pot of soup, a casserole, a dessert or salad to contribute, please leave a message for Marilyn Cooley or Kay McClain with the church office. Reimbursement for food costs is available.
