Crossways is a 2-year bible study, taught by Pastor Mike Anderson, which offers an in-depth, extensive look at the bible’s history, contexts, and meanings. One year is spent studying the Old Testament, and the second year focuses on the New Testament. Crossways meets each Wednesday night of the school year, from 7:00-8:30pm (childcare is available). The next Crossways series begins in the fall of 2010; registration materials will be available in August.
We also offer shorter length classes on a variety of topics. Upcoming opportunities include:
Being Lutheran: Reformation History, taught by Dr. Bruce Grigsby (Sundays, January 10 – March 28, 2010 at 7:00pm). Join Dr. Bruce Grigsby, Professor of Biblical Studies at Trinity Lutheran College in Everett, for a 12-week series on the history of the reformation movements in Germany, Switzerland, and England. MP3s of previous weeks’ classes are available for download:
The Book of Job, Then and Now, taught by Pastor Katy McCallum Sachse (Thursdays, March 4-25, at 6:30pm). This 4-week study of the book of Job takes us through the biblical story of Job, and into ways Job’s story is still being told in modern media – including movies, plays, and episodes of the Simpsons, West Wing, and Grey’s Anatomy. Job’s deep questions about the meaning of human suffering are as powerful today as they have ever been.
Join Rabbi Mark Glickman for Indiana Jones Meets the Da Vinci Code in a Synagogue: The Amazing but True Story of the Cairo Genizah on April 12. He’ll discuss the discovery in 1897 of a horde of medieval documents in an attic above the Ben Ezra Synagogue in Cairo, Egypt, and what those documents mean today. Rabbi Glickman is a wonderful, thoughtful, and entertaining speaker and has spoken at Holy Spirit several times – we’re delighted to welcome him back.
And spend a Saturday with Dr. Dan Peterson of Seattle University to learn about Great Lutheran Theologians (Soren Kierkegaard, Paul Tillich, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and Carl Braaten) – April 24, 2010. We’ll learn about who they were, what they said, why it mattered – and why it still does.
Registration for all classes is available through the church office; you can call or email Pastor Katy McCallum Sachse for any additional information.
