We enter the Christian community through the rite of baptism. We call this rite a sacrament because Christ
commands us to baptize (Matthew 28:19) as an entrance ritual into a life of faith. Lutheran churches baptize people
of any age, teaching that God's love and choosing us, rather than our decision about our own faith, will bring us into
God's family.
Since the earliest times of the Christian Church, special festivals have been the primary occasion for baptism.
Easter (and the prior evening when we celebrate the Easter Vigil) reminds us that in baptism we encounter death to
our sinful life and resurrection with Christ into new life. The other festival dates listed below also hold significance for baptism:
